It is my pleasure to recommend Ms. Sandi Herrera as a consultant in the area of school climate/culture development and training. I am the principal of an incredible Five Star high school in Las Vegas, West Career and Technical Academy (WCTA). In our third year of operation, we felt our school climate was good, but could be better, especially after visiting the Zappos facility in our town.

Our initial contact began with a tour of the Zappos facility in Henderson, Nevada. Zappos is regarded as a top place to work in the United States, and this prompted our interest in developing the best possible school environment for our students. Zappos climate is guided by their core values, and this is something that we lacked. Essentially, we had not defined who we were as an educational family.

This initial contact led us to Sandi Herrera, who at that time worked for a sister company of Zappos called Delivering Happiness. They are experts in organizational culture and the development of a positive and sustainable work environment – they work closely with venture capitalist, new companies, and existing companies to create incredible work environments.

Sandi assisted us in developing our school core values through a systematic approach that included multiple surveys of all educational constituents, setting benchmarks for core value development, and appropriate follow through at each and every step of the process.

There is a great deal of credibility with the Delivering Happiness approach. The process left us, the WCTA family, with a confident feeling that we had captured the true essence of our school, and what we were about. We are now “living” our core values and promoting the best qualities of what we are as students, parents, teachers, and community members. We do this through school activities and our day-to-day interactions with one another.

Traditionally, this process was done for accreditation and not valued as the “heart” of the school. With our new core values, we instead conduct activities and look for ways to continuously express them during each school day. We do this so that we are continually reminded that this is the school we want for ourselves and each other. The core value process was transparent and completed with the highest degree of integrity. Instead of sitting on a shelf, our core values have real meaning. They define our school.

We will use our core values for the first time to hire new teachers to WCTA this spring. Additionally, we will present them to our new students in the fall. This will be a continual process and we will ensure that our school will always be a fun, interesting, and dynamic place of learning for all students.

I highly recommend Ms. Sandi Herrera and the Delivering Happiness Team to any school or school district. This process was rewarding, eye opening, and most importantly a very positive experience for all involved. I have no doubt that our core values and the continuation of this process will benefit many WCTA students in the future. Simply put, our core values define who we are and what we stand for!

Our participation in the Delivering Happiness program has been without a doubt one of the best opportunities for the development of a positive school culture. Through the development of our core values we have been able to use a common language in all our communications. Whether these communications be between teachers, students, or parents, our core values guide what we think, say, and do. Our school community knows what we stand for and embrace the values that we hold as our guiding principles.

The process was easy and fun! The final outcome of our core values does not just hang as a banner on a wall but are embedded in the way we handle any situation on our campus. The best part of having our core values has been the way in which difficult conversations have become productive and win-win for all parties.
